Tell your Representative: Vote against "loser pays" legislation
It’s a fundamental part of the American tradition of fair play: If you’re wronged by a big, powerful corporation you can stand up for your rights in court. But what if a big business told you: Go ahead and sue – but if you lose, not only do you get nothing, you have to pay all of our costs to defend against you. How many everyday Americans could afford to take that risk?
That’s the threat posed by so-called “loser pays” legislation. One such bill is scheduled for a vote in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The bill, the so-called Innovation Act (H.R. 3309), targets inventors suing big businesses that steal their ideas – but you can be sure that House Republicans won’t stop there. The bill is part of the broader conservative agenda to put the thumb of big business on the scales of justice – an agenda seen not only in Congress but on the Supreme Court, where the conservative majority repeatedly has made it harder for victims of discrimination, fraud and other abuses to get justice.
Please tell your Member of Congress you won’t tolerate this erosion of your fundamental rights. Tell your Member of Congress to vote against H.R. 3309.
