Stop the Execution of Christopher Young

Christopher Young is scheduled to be executed on July 17, 2018, in Texas. Catholic Mobilizing Network calls on all people of goodwill to oppose this action. Advocate for clemency for Christopher by sending a letter to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. In Texas, the Governor MUST have the recommendation of clemency from a board or advisory group. We invite you to voice your opposition and demand that the state of Texas respect the dignity of all life with this prepared letter.

Dear Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles,

I am writing to you to express my concern over the execution of Christopher Young scheduled for July 17, 2018. As the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, you have the power of mercy and grace to grant clemency for Christopher. Over 500 religious leaders have banded together to call for a new trial for Christopher, arguing that the jury selection process was affected by religious discrimination.

At the center of my Catholic faith is the belief in the sanctity of life and the inherent dignity of the human person. This respect for life is upheld for all and is never lost from one’s actions. As Pope John Paul II said, “the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil.” This means we recognize the dignity of Christopher Young, despite his crime. The gift of life is from God alone; we do not have the power to create or destroy it.

I do not forget the undeniable grief and tremendous pain of the victim and his family. As a Church, we pray for the healing and peace of all victims of violent crime. We do not, however, condone the state’s planned execution as a form of justice. I ask that you grant clemency for Christopher Young (full name: Christopher Anthony Young; birth date: September 24, 1983; TDCJ#999508).
