Speak truth to power: Share your story about genetic testing
Myriad Genetics has exclusive patents on the "breast cancer genes," BRCA1 and BRCA2. We are actively opposing these patents in a lawsuit against Myriad because gene patents harm women's health. You can help by sharing your story about how genetic diagnostic testing has impacted you.
Have you had the BRACAnalysis test? How has Myriad's exclusive control over your genes affected you personally? Some questions to consider addressing in your comments to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office include:
- How much did your genetic testing cost? Did you get the supplemental test (also known as the BRACAnalysis Large Rearrangement Test in High Risk Patients, or BART)?
- Did you want second opinion testing after having either of these tests? Were you able to get second opinion testing if you wanted it?
- Did your health insurance pay for your genetic testing? If you don’t have health insurance, were you able to access testing anyway?
- Do you believe that enough research is currently being done on the BRCA mutations? If not, what research ideas and questions do you have about the BRCA mutations?
We’ve drafted some sample language below to get you started, but please customize it to reflect your personal experience. Your comments will be sent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as we continue to work to end gene patenting and put women’s health first.
