Dear Supporter,

The Louisiana State Senate is considering a bill that would expand exemptions to the state’s ban on private possession of big cats. The bill is designed to appease Michael Sandlin, whose captivity of Tony the Tiger was declared illegal by the Louisiana Court of Appeals in ALDF’s successful lawsuit.

Louisiana law rightfully bans private ownership of tigers and other large cats. There are a few exemptions, but the law itself is clear. The new bill, called SB 250, would create a "retroactive exemption," expanding the ways in which people could possess big cats in the state. ALDF opposes the possession of big cats because it is inhumane to the animals kept captive, and dangerous to people. Exemptions to the ban on big cat ownership waste the state’s resources and put animals in harm’s way simply to accommodate those who want to confine wild animals for entertainment or profit.

Take Action!

This outrageous "exemption" bill could be heard on the Senate floor as early as Tuesday, April 15! So now is the time to tell your State Senator that you do not support animal protection law exemptions. Please pick up the phone now!

Take five minutes to make a brief, polite call to your State Senator. You can simply say, "Hello. I am one of your constituents and I'm concerned about the welfare of captive tigers in our state. I would like you to vote against SB 250."

After you call, send a follow-up message, stating (in your own words) that you would like your State Senator to vote against SB 250.

Please help us oppose this blatant attempt to subvert animal protection laws in Louisiana. Tell your lawmakers to keep Louisiana’s big cat law strong instead of watering it down with more exemptions.

For the animals,

Stephen Wells
