The Tennessee General Assembly has sent a bill to Governor Haslam’s desk that would have drastic consequences for farmed animals in Tennessee. The bill is on his desk right now.
Please call Governor Haslam’s office today at (615) 741-2001 and urge him to veto Senate Bill 1248.
Animal abuse, food safety violations, and illegal working conditions are rampant on factory farms. To hide these crimes, mega-corporations that control most of our food production are attempting to pass ag gag laws to stop the spread of information and hide the truth about outrageous violations of the law. Don’t be fooled by rhetoric -- the truth is: these laws aim to restrict our ability to collect evidence of criminal misconduct.
Senate Bill 1248 would require anyone who documents animal cruelty on a factory farm to turn over their evidence to law enforcement within 48 hours. Although reporting cruelty is usually a good thing, this bill is a transparent attempt to undermine investigations, which typically take days, weeks, or even months to complete. This mandatory reporting bill essentially forces whistleblowers to blow the whistle on themselves before they can complete their important work of documenting animal cruelty.
A polite call to the governor’s office expressing your opposition to Senate Bill 1248 is easy and quick. Please take just two minutes to call Governor Haslam’s office now at (615) 741-2001.
