Ask Legislators to Support the Professional Expertise of Teachers

Please contact your Senators and Representative to ask that policymakers support the professional expertise of teachers.

Because they know their subject matter and their students, teachers should select materials, develop curricula, and decide teaching strategies, including and especially during this time of new standards. Teachers should also generate and use their own formative assessments to continuously track student learning.

The following template letter makes the case for this request if you care to adopt or adapt it. Including your own experience with the benefits of teacher expertise in materials selection, curriculum development, and choice of teaching strategies and in generating and in using their own formative assessments will fortify your request.

Action to take:

1.    Read the template letter.
2.    Include in the letter, if you choose, your own account of the need for using teacher expertise for important decision making, especially in this time of new standards.
3.    Fill out the form.
4.    Send the letter.

Thank you on behalf of teachers in your state and throughout the country.
